Ursel, or "Little Bear," was named after her Dam, INT CH VC Feld Jaegers Berit Gore MH, that we affectionately called "Bear." Ursel led the way being first born and was screaming before she even hit the ground. This was a clue to her independent attitude. She was a different type of puppy. Ursel never went through a "blow us off stage." Ursel, like her Dam Berit, tested at the NAVHDA Natural Ability level at an early age. Unlike her mother, Ursel swam two times for a bumper during the NA test. Ursel had a problem in the field when she encountered a hole which caused her to do a cartwheel. This resulted in less of a search than what was normal for Ursel and affected her score. At days end, Ursel earned a NAVHDA Ability prize III with 91 points at the young age of 13 weeks. There is no doubt that this early performance is due to her Dam, Berit, the fourth youngest dog in NAVHDA history to earn an NA prize - doing so at only 13 weeks old.
After her NA test, during a training session in the sloughs of South Dakota, Ursel was retrieving ducks repeatedly from a couple hundred yards at the age of 16 weeks. Ursel is at home in the water as she is in the field. She impressed us during her first season in the woods with her nose and ability to stand birds until we arrived. On one of Ursel's first bird contacts, the GPS indicated she was on point 170 yards away. Ursel stood the bird until we got there and allowed us to flush and kill it. Last fall Ursel was pressed into service as a grouse and woodcock guide dog. She proved up to the challenge by logging more miles covered than the older more experienced gun dogs, and she put more birds in the bag. In fact, she was so determined to outperform the other dogs that she had to be stopped several times to offer water and allow her to cool off. At times, Ursel’s "do it my way" attitude has been a challenge in training. Others have commented, "Thank goodness she is not mine," during training due to her overly intense prey drive and independence - yet have offered to buy her after she displayed her mettle on wild birds.
In the IABCA show ring, Ursel's excellent confirmation and her ability to be a "ham" resulted in her taking Best of Breed and Best of Group to advance to the Best of Show ring at the Purina Farms Event Center in St. Louis, MO. Ursel thoroughly enjoyed performing in the show ring. In the house she gets along well with other dogs. She has the ability to turn off her drive and is content to settle in with a chew bone or accept a good petting as a "lap dog."
To date Ursel has earned a NAVHDA NA Prize III 91 pts, and is part of a NAVHDA Natural Ability Breeders Award Litter along with having earned the title of IABCA International Champion. With 5 generations of NAVHDA Versatile Champions on the top of her pedigree and 5 generations of AKC Dual Champions on the bottom of her pedigree, the odds for success are in Ursel’s favor.
Ursel has whelped an NA breeders award litter in 2014.
