Dankar’s Jaegen von Feld Horst, “Hunter of Field and Wooded Thicket,” the litter from INT CH VC Feld Jaeger’s Berit Gore MH X INT CH VC Dankar’s Haupt von Ebenbildt MH, was not on the ground long when this male puppy caught our eye (more accurately Dan’s eye). It was not only his good looks and confirmation that caught our eye, but the fact he was fearless and could not be deterred from what he wanted. As training began, Horst displayed a great search and a ton of point as a puppy. He is ready to work at a moment’s notice. If you add the fact that his Sire and Dam are both fifth generation NAVHDA Versatile Champions and sixth generation AKC Master Hunters, it equals a recipe for success.
Horst’s introduction to water saw him diving in and swimming 70 yards across a pond in pursuit of a big dog with no hesitation. We were sold. During his first season in the woods it was amazing to watch him hunt with purpose and intelligence. Horst was not deterred by the toughest cover. He located and staunchly pointed as many birds as the older experienced dogs.
He displayed a tremendous nose, standing well off his birds. With no exposure or training, Horst held steady for multiple birds, pointed birds when sent for a retrieve, or pointed birds while retrieving with a bird in his mouth. He displayed panache for hunting woodcock, pointing more than four times the daily limit in an hour. There is no doubt that his Dam, Berit, contributed significantly to his development at an early age. Horst displayed an innate talent for retrieving.
He tolerates training pressure well and easily completed the force fetch process. He has a can-do attitude. His prey drive along with a love of water has been an easy train for the duck search. He hits the water at full speed! Horst shows a willingness to please and is a delightful house dog. He is a goofball and his antics are humorous! He gets along well with other dogs and despite his young age we trust him explicitly with the next generation of puppies, which is a testament to his mild temperament.
Horst earned a NAVHDA Natural Ability Prize I with the maximum score of 112 pts at the age of 6 months. We are continuing Horst’s training and look forward to testing him at the NAVHDA Utility level in 2013.
